Stan Crane Memorial
Corner Canyon Draper, Monday May 30, 2011

On a wet and cold Memorial Day Monday morning, 29 UMB team members showed up to race on the Corner Canyon trails for the 6th ICup race of the season. It was 38 degrees during registration, with occasional fine rain. The trails were thoroughly soaked but held up well, with only occasional mud-bogs. UMB had first place finishes by Michael Buhler, Rachel Hutchings, Richard Ewell, and Joel Quinn, with 2nd places by Jonathan Hall and Jay Griffin.

Category 9-and-under:

	Left: Coleman Cowan pedals through wet oak brush on the 9-and-under loop as he rides to a 4th place spot in the category. Right: Riding down the slimy singletrack on her first lap, Sydney Nielsen gets a good finish in 9-and-under with 8th place.
	Left: Riding strong after a tumble on the slippery trail, Taylor Carson bundles up against the cold as he hurries to 11th place. Right: Braking carefully on a downhill section in the oak brush, Parker Horton takes the 12th place finish in 9-and-under.

Category 10-12: UMB had no age 10-12 riders at this race.


Wet. Gloomy. Cold. Looking north at the puddles on the sand of the arena, we see snow covering the mountains down to the valley floor as more clouds threaten.	Jackie barks at the passing pooches from the safety of a locked car. But notice the stuff below the windshield wipers. Yep, that's SNOW.

Beginner 13-15: UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at Soldier Hollow!

Beginner 16-18: UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders!

Beginner 19-29:

Left: Back on the "starter lap" below
the tunnel, Michael Buhler cranks uphill as
he nears the end of his race, taking another
1st place in Beginner Men 19-29.

Right: Getting away from the rain under
the UMB canopy, Jason sets up road bikes
on the trainers, where he and Mark will
warm up for the race.

Beginner 30-39:

Left: Wayne Baker pivots a turn as he heads
out into his lap, finishing with 5th place.

Right: Christian Burrell nears the finish area
in the deep grass, taking 10th place.

Left: Making his first appearance this year is
Chris Morrill, riding uphill on his way to 11th
place in Beginner Men 30-39.

Right: Back with the team for his first race this
year, Evan Christensen hustles to the 12th
place finish.

Beginner 40-plus:

Left: Adam Reynders cranks toward the
railroad tracks as he grabs a point for the
team with a 7th place finish in Beginner
Men 40-plus.

Right: Looking toward the start-finish
area. The racers will descend the steep
rutted area in the foreground, which has
washed into gullies during the night.

Beginner Women:

Left: Face splotched with mud, Rachel
Hutchings cranks up the final stretch toward
a 1st place in Beginner Women.

Right: Two-way traffic. At the exit from
the tunnel, riders heading into the big
loop pass riders coming down from the
mountain. There was at least one
collision.

Sport/Expert 13-15: UMB had no S/E 13-15 riders!

Sport/Expert 16-18: UMB had no S/E 16-18 riders!

Sport Men 19-29:

Left: Ian Beaty pivots a turn through the
fence near the retention pond as he nears
the finish of lap one. Despite a broken
derailleur, Ian keeps at it and grabs the
4th place finish in Sport Men 19-29.

Right: The Tunnel. After riding the little loop
below Highland Drive, racers entered the
darkness of the tunnel under Highland Drive
to head out to the big loop on the mountain.

Sport Men 30-34:

Left: Dan Hutchings is finishing his first lap as he pedals
uphill toward the pond. Dan gets the 11th place position in
Sport Men 30-34.

Right: Ben Hutchings tips down onto the gravel
along the pond as he finishes his last lap, taking
the 12th place finish.

Sport Men 35-39:

Left: Cranking around a turn in the
oak brush below the start-finish area,
Jonathan Hall makes a great race to
take 2nd place in Sport Men 35-39.

Right: After exiting the tunnel, Mark adds
more power to get up and around the
sandy turn that leads to the upper
mountain.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Left: Stephan Bergen flies along the railroad track on
the little "starter lap" as he rides to a ribbon at 6th place
in Sport Men 40-plus.

Right: Dale Hutchings nears the final turn that will
put him on the gravel road leading up to the finish
line, taking 15th place in the category.

Sport Women: UMB had no Sport Women riders!

Expert Men 19-29:

Left: Casey Zaugg gets forward to make
a twisting climb on his second lap,
finishing on the podium with 3rd place
in Expert Men 19-29

Right: Once you get past the wet and cold,
it's actually kind of pretty. Green grass with
white snow.

Expert Men 30-39: UMB had no Expert Men 30-39 riders!

Expert Men 40-plus:


Mark Messer heads downhill in grass and sage, nailing 3rd place in Expert Men 40-plus.	Jason Sparks fires uphill through the trees on his final lap, taking the 5th place finish in the category.	Mike Engberson ranks around the final turn below the start-finish area. Mike has no finish listed. Wassup?

Expert Women: UMB had no Expert Women riders!

Singlespeed:

Left: Shane Horton cranks around a turn as he
keeps ahead of the competition, finishing with
the 5th place spot in Singlespeed.

Right: Darren Harris tips into a turn on
slippery trail as he rides his singlespeed
to a 9th place finish.

Clydesdale:

Left: Richard Ewell gets started on his
lap as he cranks through grass and sage
near the railroad tracks. Richard grabs
the 1st place win in Clydesdale.

Right: Sydney crosses the finish line.

Women 35-plus:

Left: Sally Reynders heads downhill on
narrow singletrack, riding to the 5th place
position in Women 35-plus.

Right: At the end of the race, both
bikes and butts were coated in mud.

Men 50-plus:

Left: Jay Griffin heads out on the singletrack
along Highland Drive on his first lap, nailing
the 2nd place spot in Men 50-plus.

Right: Jake tends the burgers and dogs on
the grill while the team gets fed. It had
warmed up considerably by lunchtime.

Men 57-plus:


Joel Quinn heads along the tracks early in the race, taking 1st place in Men 57-plus.	Bruce Argyle hustles down the trail on a slightly-squishy tire, settling for 4th place.	Bundled up against the cold, Gene Poncelet races to the 5th place spot in the category.

The weather warmed up before the awards, and it turned out to be a great racing day. Draper is usually one of the most-attended races, but the rotten weather kept many racers away. Our racers who braved the early-morning ugliness did well. The season is now more than half over.
