Five weeks
until
Race Day
A series of every-other-day storms put two feet
of snow on the hillside. A few warm days have
compacted the snow, so it's ready for people to
venture back onto the trails.
There's up to 18 inches in shady spots but only
about 8 in open areas. The north corner of
the race loop is shoveled to entice bikes onto
the trail. (Connector from Bowery still buried.)

Four weeks
until
Race Day
More huge storms hit Lambert Park this week.
(That's 17 days of snow in the past 28 days!)
The trail is buried. In spots where I haven't
worked, you can't even tell there's a trail.
The weather report says we'll have a week
without snow. I'll get the race loop marked.
The trail might be ready for bikes by next weekend.
Here's a spot I cleared. Note glove. 24 inches!
Wednesday
Jan 14
First 1/2 mile of race loop (starting at Bowery) clear.
South end thinning fast, still too tough for bikes.
Trail is marked at all intersections and forks,
starting downhill from the Bowery parking area.

Three weeks
until
Race Day
The snow is still deep and heavy. In some
spots (for example, Zag) it's thin enough to
bull through. Shovels have hit only about
3/4 mile of the course (but not this spot).
Most of the trail looks like this. Two sets of
footprints, surface rough and impossible to ride.
One lonely Burley tiretrack. I've never seen so
few hikers on the park's trails as this winter.

Two weeks
until
Race Day
The rain and warmer temperatures have
melted the snow from cleared trail.
Loop is about 50:50 dirt to packed snow.
The entire race loop is ready, but wait
for freezing temperatures before riding.
Here's Derek helping clear the Spring Trail.
Sunday
Jan 25
About 5 inches of very heavy snow
fell in Lambert Park today.
It might still be possible to ride,
but there's more snow forecast for tomorrow.

Snow on Monday made riding impossible.
Three inches of heavy sleet (frozen solid)
with 8 more inches of fluff on top.

Combination of extreme rolling resistance
with poor traction = can't ride!

Snowing again today.
The trail is not ready to ride.

Heavy snow everywhere. Many trees
leaning into trail. Walked entire loop to
mark the route.
 Replaced stolen marker signs.
Cut away branches hanging into trails,
Did some trail packing.

Thursday
Jan 29

Today we packed the singletrack of the race loop.
Not a real solid surface yet, but ready to ride.
Not an easy ride, but the loop is ready for bikes.
We didn't pack the short doubletrack sections
on south end. That part will be a hike-a-bike
tomorrow morning, but will be packed shortly.

The southern half of Middle is rough
