Desert Rampage
Green Valley Race Loop, St. George. March 6, 2010

The weather was pleasant in St. George for the kick-off to the 2010 Intermountain Cup racing series. The UtahMountainBiking.com team showed off their 2010 jerseys for the first time. The turnout was huge for this popular race, and the UMB team fielded 60 racers. We had a racer in every division except Pro and Beginner Men 19-29. First-place winners for UMB were Justin Griffin, Jay Griffin, and Jack Gage, with a second-place finish by Eric Ellis.  Photo: Jack Gage nails first place in SM 30-34.

Cholla Challenge
Warner Valley Race Loop, Hurricane. April 3, 2010

While the northland was preparing for an Easter-weekend snowstorm, UMB turned out 54 racers for the Cholla Challenge. The gentle hazy sunlight at Warner Valley was perfect for racing. The UtahMountainBiking team scored a decisive victory, setting a new record for team points. Justin Griffin and Jay Griffin won 1st places, with Joshua Peterson, Jeff Frederick, Sally Fairbairn, Mark Messer, and Joel Quinn getting 2nd place finishes.

Showdown at Five Mile Pass
Five Mile Pass, west of Lehi.  May 1, 2010

While sleet and snow pounded the Wasatch Front, Five Mile pass was dry and dusty on raceday morning. UMB turned out 44 racers. And while many racers hiked their flats back toward the finish line, UMB had relatively few mechanical disasters. The team scored another convincing win, with Justin Griffin, Mark Messer, and Jay Griffin taking 1st places, and Hattie Ransom, Ryan Anderson, Darren Harris, Jason Sparks, and Cat Finlayson getting 2nd place finishes.

Sundance Spin
Sundance Resort, North Fork, Provo Canyon. May 15, 2010

Sundance was about as perfect as a race can be. The weather was clear and beautiful. Sundance did a great job of getting their excellent trail system ready for the race. The always-great singletrack was the best it's ever been. 40 racers represented UMB. We had our customary after-race picnic with burgers and hot dogs, and those wonderful salads provided by team members. Steven Barlow, Kyle Jackson, Mark Messer, and Jay Griffin took 1st places, with Joel Quinn, Russ Margetts, Ryan Anderson, Chris Cole, and Jack Gage getting 2nd place finishes.

Hammerfest at the Hollow
Soldier Hollow, Midway.  May 22, 2010

At 7 am, it was decision time. Race, or stay home? It was dark and raining, 35 degrees, with fresh snow blanketing the foothills. Our team members showed their resolve, and came away with the biggest team victory in Intermountain Cup history. Forty team members did battle with the muddy trail. UMB team riders Joshua Peterson, Ian Beaty, Ryan Olsen, Rachel Hutchings, Mark Messer, Justin Griffin, and Jay Griffin took 1st places, with Joel Quinn, Ryan Anderson, Derek Ransom, Chris Cole, and Jack Gage getting 2nd place finishes.

Stan Crane Memorial
Draper, Monday May 31 (Memorial Day), 2010

The weather was (finally) non-threatening, so riders turned out in huge numbers. Around 400 riders competed. In the Sport Men 40+, 43 riders started and 37 finished. The UMB fielded a total of 57 riders. Our largest categories were the 9-and-under and the 10-12 with seven riders each. First place finishes were scored by Jack Gage, Darren Harris, Eric Ellis, and Chris Cole, with 2nd place by Joshua Peterson, Taylor Watkins, Kevin Pferdner, Sally Fairbairn, and Joel Quinn. Draper's trails were in great shape, and racers enjoyed the 9-mile loop. The course mixed straight-ahead climbs with flying descents, plus a bit of twisting tree-dodging. The weather was perfect; filtered sunlight, not hot and not chilly.

Deer Valley Pedalfest
Deer Valley, June 16, 2010

On the scheduled race day, Saturday the 12th, racers hid from the rain under the overhang around the ski ticket office, waiting for the decision. At 9 am, Ed postponed the race because the trails were too wet to ride safely, and riding would cause serious damage to the trails themselves. The race was held 6 pm on Wednesday the 16th. But the weather send another cold front to ambush the intrepid bikers, as temperatures fell from the mid-50s to the low 40s in a light cold rain. UMB had 7 first place finishes: Ryan Olsen, Zachary Peterson, Brooklyn Ellis, Stephen Brown, Darren Harris, Chris Cole, and Jay Griffin, with 2nd places by Joshua Peterson, Jack Gage, Ryan Nielsen, and Joel Quinn.

Wimmer's Race at Sherwood
Sherwood Hills, Logan, June 19, 2010

The weather and the trails were perfect for the 8th Intermountain Cup race of the season, held at Sherwood Hills. 38 racers represented the UMB team at Sherwood. Team members Ryan Margetts, Ryan Olsen, Zachary Peterson, Jack Gage, Darren Harris, Angelica Jameriez, and Chris Cole nailed first place in their categories. Russ Margetts, Stephen Brown, Mark Messer, Colleen Tvorik, Nathan Drozd, Shane Horton, Sally Hutchings, and Joel Quinn scored 2nd place. A total of 18 UMB riders got onto the podium!

Taming the Tetons
Jackson Hole, June 26, 2010

A thunderstorm hit Teton Village just as riders were heading to the race site, but by race time it was sunny and the trails were in great condition. There were a few swamp spots in addition to the usual plank-rides over marshy areas, but Jackson again offered up beautiful technical forest singletrack with plenty of rocks and roots. 37 riders from the UMB team raced at Jackson. Joshua Peterson, Kevin Pferdner, Zachary Peterson, Jack Gage, Ryan Nielsen, and Angelica Jameriez scored first place finishes, with Justin Pferdner, Andrew Weber, Steven Barlow, Rachel Hutchings, Mike Horne, and Joel Quinn grabbing 2nd place.

Snowbird Mountain Bout
Snowbird Resort, Little Cottonwood Canyon, July 3, 2010

The Snowbird ICup race saw clear blue skies and crisp temperatures. The trail was more technical than in previous years, with plenty of embedded rocks in the singletrack and dangerous washouts on the tram road descent. The UMB team enjoyed a good turnout as 46 racers hit the mountain, running up a record-tying 175 team points. Joshua Peterson, Ryan Olsen, Chris Cole, Jack Gage, Mark Messer, and Angelica Jameriez took first place in their categories. Steven Barlow, Shane Horton, Rachel Hutchings, Cat Finlayson, Casey Zaugg, and Joel Quinn won 2nd place.

Solitude State Open
Solitude Resort, Big Cottonwood Canyon, July 10, 2010

The weather was clear and sunny for the Utah state championships at Solitude Resort for the 11th race of the 2010 ICup season. An overnight thunderstorm made the trail perfect for the first wave of riders, but dust and warmth became a factor in the 11 o'clock race. The UMB team fielded only 35 racers, and surprisingly, not a single beginning-class rider. Joshua Peterson and Jack Gage won State Championships with first place in their categories, while Nathan Drozd, Brian Oliver, Cat Finlayson, Zach Peterson, Jared Muir, and Mark Messer took second places.

Basin Bash XC
Snowbasin, Ogden Canyon, July 31, 2010

The weather was sunny and humid on Saturday morning as the UMB team lined up to tackle the new race loop at Snowbasin. The trail was hot, rough, and long. We set a new record for team members who didn't finish the race, but still won the competition. New team members did some of the heavy lifting this week as John Pendleton and Jason True took first places in their categories. Justin Griffin, Joel Quinn, and Casey Zaugg also nailed the top podium spot, with Ryan Margetts, Ryan Payne, and Mark Messer taking second place finishes.

Rock the Canyons
The Canyons Resort, Park City, August 7, 2010
Season Championship Race

It was the final Intermountain Cup race of the season, the last of 13. The weather was sunny during the race, becoming a little warm toward the end. Recent rain made the trail solid, so the singletrack was in great condition. Racers were treated to a free lunch, with awards on the plaza below the race loop. Joshua Peterson, Justin Griffin, Steven Barlow, Casey Zaugg, Angelica Jamierez, and Jason True took first place finishes, with Zachary Peterson, Jake Weber, Jay Griffin, and Mark Messer scoring second place. The season awards were chased indoors by a cloudburst, where several UMB riders made the season podium.

Season Championships
The Canyons Resort, Park City, August 7, 2010

In the 2010 season, a record-setting 20 UMB racers earned a spot on the season podium. Many others came close. For each individual racer in a Sport, Expert, or Open category, racer points were counted for the top 11 of that racer's 13 races. Winning an individual category season championship takes a lot of effort and sacrifice. But all team members deserve a nod for their contributions to winning the 2010 team championship, thereby retiring the 12-year trophy with four season wins.
