Green Valley Trail (Bear-claw Poppy Trail) The Green Valley Trail starts southwest of St. George in Green Valley, curving around a bluff into Bloomington. Highlights include a not-too-tough aerobic one-mile hill climb, a run down a desert wash, a series of short "scary but not too hairy" drop-offs, and a roller coaster hard-pack BMX course. This trail is a blast to ride, year-round. The trail is moderate aerobic and intermediate technical. If you don't stop to play, it's also a fairly quick ride -- the 5.5 mile trail and 6 mile road loop can be completed in less than 90 minutes. Younger children can ride the tamer stretches of clay trail on the Bloomington end of the Green Valley Trail -- just drive to the Bloomington end of the trail, and start riding there. |
| The trail starts with a modest climb up the side of a sandstone canyon. That's just to warm you up. Then the fun starts.(Hilltop N 37° 05.162' W 113° 38.831') First the red dirt: "The Three Fingers of Death," or Lion's Paw. (There's an easier route that winds around the steep stuff.) Plunge down to the "The Wash" and orange dirt. From the wash, the trail goes on to the white clay of the "Acid Drops," the last of which is the dreaded Clavicle Hill! (N 37° 04.209' W 113° 39.299') Then it's on to the BMX "Roller Coaster" south of Bloomington Hill. The trail rock 'n rolls through hard-packed desert dirt. Awesome! |

Getting there: Take the
Bluff Street I-15 exit in St. George and turn west. Immediately turn south
(left) at the first light. Go over the hill and at the T intersection at
the bottom of the hill turn right. Head northwest about two miles on Dixie
Drive. Turn left at Canyon View Road, heading uphill toward the Green
Valley Spa. (If you reach a "Green Valley Market" with gas
pumps, you just passed it. Turn around and backtrack to the second road on
your right.) Drive past the spa onto dirt at the end of the road. You can park here and
ride to the road that climbs the RIGHT side of the little sandstone
canyon. Or, you can stay in your car, turn right on dirt, then drop left
down into the valley 100 yards later. Follow the improved gravel road up
to the parking area about 3/4 mile later. (We recommend that youngsters go to the Bloomington end of the trail! All of the
scary stuff is north of Clavicle Hill. At the end of Navajo Drive, park just
across the cattle guard. The "lift-over" in the fence on your
right is the start of the trail.) Trailhead N 37° 05.509' W 113° 37.689' Copyright 2002 Mad Scientist Software Inc Trail conditions change, and the layout of a trail may change without notice. Use this trail guide at your own risk. |
