Baby Steps Loop
The Baby Steps trail is a singletrack route that forks off the Klondike Bluffs trail. It can be used as a longer, more technical climb to Klondike Bluffs, or ridden as a loop using a section of the Klondike Bluffs trail as a downhill connector. Some sections of the trail are quite technical. The trails narrow track, loose sidewalls, and occasional technical spots give the trail an advanced rating. Elevation change is 900 feet, but you'll do some up-and-down riding on the singletrack. If you follow the trail to the top, you'll have to leave your bike at the Arches National Park boundary. From there, it's a half-mile hike to the overlook.
Riding options:
Big Baby: From US 191 to the Bluffs and back via Baby Steps - 20.5 miles.
Big Tour: From US 191, uphill via Baby Steps, to the turnaround at the Bluffs, down via Klondike - 17 miles.
Baby up and down: From the gate of the uphill trailhead (2.8 miles from US 191), head via Baby Steps up to Klondike Bluffs, retrace route down Baby Steps - 14.9 miles.
Baby Loop: From the gate of the uphill trailhead, uphill on Baby Steps, downhill on Klondike when Baby Steps intersects it, 1 mile later catch connector back to Baby Steps and head downhill - 7.4 miles.
Directions: From the gate 2.8 miles from US 191, cross the cattleguard and go 0.9 miles on Klondike Bluffs. Turn left on doubletrack. About 0.9 miles later, fork right uphill and proceed up through a slickrock area, following the rock piles. A short distance after the trail becomes dirt doubletrack again, you'll fork right onto singletrack. (You'll see some tire tracks going straight; ignore them.) Follow the singletrack until it drops onto sandstone, marked with white hash-marks. Turn left (right connects to Klondike Bluffs). The trail will alternate between rock and doubletrack. As you get onto some fairly boring-appearing doubletrack, watch for the singletrack branching off on the left. At a fork in the singletrack, keep right on the more-traveled trail. There will be some technical sections here. After a couple of miles, the singletrack will dump you back onto the same doubletrack you were riding earlier. Turn left. The doubletrack will become rocky and veer east, then south, finally reaching the Klondike Bluffs trail about a mile before its end.
If you're riding the loop, turn right downhill. If you're heading for the Bluffs, turn left. If you want to catch Baby Steps on the way downhill, follow Klondike 1 mile from the trail junction. Navigate the white slickrock area. Just before you reach the downhill slickrock ramp with the dino tracks, you'll run into hashmarks winding around the dirt that borders the slickrock. Turn right and follow the marks northeast. About 1/4 mile later, watch for a bicycle painted on the rock. Turn left onto the rock, and you're retracing your (baby) steps down the first singletrack section.

Getting there: Starting at the Colorado River, drive 15 miles north from Moab. Look for a turnout on the right. There will usually be cars parked there. GPS N 38° 44.452' W 109° 44.037'  Go through the gate and drive 2.7 miles. Keep left at the fork. At 2.8 miles, park your car at the gate and begin your ride.
