State Open, Solitude Resort
Big Cottonwood Canyon - July 10, 2010

The weather was clear and sunny for the Utah state championships at Solitude Resort for the 11th race of the 2010 ICup season. An overnight thunderstorm made the trail perfect for the first wave of riders, but dust and warmth became a factor in the 11 o'clock race. The UMB team fielded only 35 racers, and surprisingly, not a single beginning-class rider. Joshua Peterson and Jack Gage won State Championships with first place in their categories, while Nathan Drozd, Brian Oliver, Cat Finlayson, Zach Peterson, Jared Muir, and Mark Messer took second places.

Left:  Jack navigates the dangerous boulders on that ugly section of downhill toward the end of the loop.

Category 9-and-under:

Left:  Tylan Parkinson was our only
9-and-under rider at Solitude. Tylan
takes a dab to get around a slippery
turn on the downhill ski slope, finishing
in 10th place.

Right:  A few clouds hung over Big
Cottonwood Canyon early on Saturday,
but they burned off in the morning
sunshine.

Category 10-12:

Joshua Peterson carves a turn as he
heads toward the Serenity Singletrack
for a 4.5-mile loop and a 1st place finish.

Harrison Woodard applies the brakes
on the rocky downhill. A few hundred
yards more, and he'll have 8th place.

Shawn Nielsen pedals through a turn
on the ski slope early in his lap,
taking 9th place on this tough course.

Beginner 13-15:  UMB had no Beginner 13-15 riders at this race!

Beginner 16-18:     UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders at this race!

Beginner 19-29:   UMB had no Beginner 19-29 riders at this race!

Beginner 30-39:  UMB had no Beginner 30-39 riders at this race!

Beginner 40-plus:  UMB had no Beginner 40-plus riders at this race!

Beginner Women:  UMB had no Beginner Women at this race!

A buck and doe watch the race from the ski slope. They'd heard that the UtahMountainBiking.com race team had no
Beginner-class riders
at this race, and came to see for themselves. The squirrel can't believe it, either.

Sport/Expert 13-15:

Zachary Peterson hits a bermed turn
after the shakeout climb, completing
an upper and lower loop for 2nd place.

Dallin Johnson cranks away from the
quaking aspen and fir, getting a podium
spot with a nice 3rd place finish.

Brayden Nielsen broke his chain on
the last lap, coasting toward the finish
and running across for 4th place.

Sport/Expert 16-18:

Left:  Jared Muir rails a turn on the
first of two big upper laps, nailing a
2nd  place spot in Sport-Expert 16-18.

Right:  In the second race, the Sport Men
30-34 category sprints away from the
start line to start the shakeout climb.

Sport Men 19-29:

Left:  Ian Beaty traverses the mountain on his
second big lap, finishing with the 5th place
spot in Sport Men 19-29.

Right:  Stephen Brown banks a turn on the ski slope
near the lap/finish split, finishing with team points
for the 7th place position.

Sport Men 30-34:

Left:  Jack Gage dodges a boulder on the downhill
of his first lap, on the way to the state championship
with 1st place.

Right:  Dan Hutchings pivots a turn early in his first lap,
taking the green ribbon and team points with 6th place.

Left:  In his first race for UMB, Stephen's brother
Tom Brown comes up from the west coast to
don a team jersey and finish in 7th place.

Right:  With this race, Ryan Olsen moves up to the Sport
class. The mountain is unkind to Ryan, flatting his
front tire in the second lap. Ryan gets across the
finish line in 8th place.

The Solitude race loop has a tricky and technical downhill. Sport and Expert riders had to contend with the roots, drops, and rocks of Kruzr.
But all riders except the 9-and-unders had to get down the ugly rock-laden chute just before the final dipsy-doodle. There were
a lot of crashes, a few broken chains, and many flat tires. This rider isn't on our team, but we're glad he's OK anyway.

Sport Men 35-39:

Mark Messer heads across the ski slope
in his first lap, finishing on the podium
with 2nd place.

Ryan Nielsen carves around the turn,
1/3 mile into a 14-mile 3200-vertical
race, taking the 4th place spot.

Mike Horne heads down the rock chute.
Mike broke his chain on lap two, and had
to coast downhill to 5th place.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Left:  Jason Sparks gets the bike up and over a
big granite boulder on the downhill of his first
lap. Jason nails the 4th place spot in Sport Men 40-plus.

Right:  Brian Ressa cranks up and around a turn on his
second lap of this long race, taking 11th place.

Sport Women:

Cat Finlayson cranks out of a turn
early in her first lap, finishing on the
podium with 2nd place.

Colleen Tvorik is happy to hit the final
series of downhill turns before the end
of the race and a 4th place finish.

Angelica Ramirez is hit with two flat
tires, but fights back into the pack to
take 5th place.

Expert Men 19-29:  UMB had no Expert Men 19-29 riders at this race!

Ryan Olsen slides out hard on a turn, then picks his bike up to discover a flat front tire. Ryan finished the race, but did he run the bike
to the finish, or did he ride it across?
Expert Men 30-39:

Left:   Nathan Drozd follows the trail as it twists
downhill through the aspens on his third
lap, finishing with the 2nd place position in Expert
Men 30-39.

Right:  Chris Cole powers out of a turn as he begins
his first lap on his singlespeed. For this race, Chris
moved from Singlespeed to Expert 30-39, and despite
a crash, finished with a ribbon at 6th place.

Darren Harris cranks through the
forest on the second of three laps,
finishing with the 8th place spot.

Mike Engberson turns downhill after
fixing a flat tire, hanging on to finish
with 9th place.

Derek Ransom hits the downhill hard on
lap #1, but is knocked back to 11th place
with a long list of disasters.

Expert Men 40-plus:  UMB had no Expert Men 40+ riders at this race!

Expert Women:   UMB had no Expert Women riders at this race!

Singlespeed:

Left:  Brian Oliver powers down to keep up the speed
as he finishes with 2nd place in Singlespeed.

Right:  Shane Horton cranks across the ski slope in
his first lap, finishing on the podium with 3rd place.

After tasting the mountain soil with a face-plant, Dale gets the checkout from his wife.
A bit of missing tooth adds character, don't you think?

Clydesdale:

Left:  Ryan Payne powers through a turn on the
singletrack of the first lap, getting onto the
podium with 3rd place in Clydesdale.

Right:  Karl Parkinson pedals at the exit of a turn
as he heads down the winding final stretch to the
finish line and 5th place.

Women 35-plus:

Left:  Sally Fairbairn rails a tight turn as she
approaches the lap/finish split on her final
lap, taking 4th place in Women 35-plus.

Right: Sally Hutchings pivots away from the forest and
onto the ski slope in her first lap, getting a ribbon and
team points with 6th place.

Men 50-plus:

Left:  Jeff Kingsford drops downhill
through an aspen grove during his
second lap, taking the 9th place spot
in Men 50-plus.

Right:  Kay's race photos show quite a few
of our riders accumulating dirt and blood as
the race goes on.  This knee belongs to
Chris.

Men 57-plus:

Left:  Bruce Argyle tips into a turn as
he approaches the finish line on his
final lap, taking 5th place in 57-plus.

Right:  Team members gather to
share food and stories.

There wasn't any reason to think we'd win this race. Key racers were missing. For example, Justin was injured during a pre-ride; Jay was ill; Joel was out with back pain. Our entire Beginner squad was doing other things. It was our smallest turnout, and the most "empty" categories of this season. We had crashes, broken chains, and flat tires -- more than our share. But when the race ended, our riders had given enough. We got the most points, increasing our lead toward the season championship. Great job!
