Hammerfest at the Hollow
Soldier Hollow  -  May 16, 2009

It was a perfect day for racing as the sun lit up the clean air on the east side of Mount Timpanogos in the Heber Valley. Temperatures were pleasantly cool. The trail was dry, well, except for a little gooey grass just before the finish line. Surprisingly, dust wasn't a major issue. On the descent from the upper mountain, some tire-track grooves made the sharp turns a little more dicey, and many turns featured challenging washboard bumps. But overall the singletrack was smooth, fast, and fun. Our team had first place finishes by Dallin Johnson, Jared Muir, Colleen Tvorik, and second place wins by Jakob Haderlie, Zachary Peterson, Ryan Payne, Jay Griffin, and Justin Griffin.

Left:  Jason Sparks carves a turn in the meadow south of the finish area. Around the trees, up The Wall, then sprint to the finish line.

Category 9-and-under:
Left:  Jakob Haderlie gets another great race, as he
and a competing strong rider grab a big lead
on the rest of the field. Jakob comes in with a
close 2nd place finish in 9-and-under.

Right:  Justin Pferdner makes his presence felt
on the UMB race team by turning in a strong
3rd place win, good for a trip to the podium
and 6 team points.

Left:  Sydney Nielsen takes a hit off the hydration
pack after the mean climb up to the top of the
9-and-under loop. Sydney pedals on to take
13th place.

Right:  Jacey Messer races for the first time at
Soldier Hollow and completes the two laps
as the 16th finisher. Glad to have you on the
team, Jacey!

Category 10-12:

Left:  Zachary Peterson battles at the front of the
10-12 pack, completing this tough race at 2nd place.
This category did two laps of approximately 4 miles at
Solder Hollow, including some pretty tough climbing.

Right:  Joshua Peterson hurries to a solid 3rd place win
with a big gap on the other riders. Together, brothers
Josh and Zach make a potent point-grabbing machine
for the UMB team!

Harrison Woodard aims downhill in the
meadow on the way to winning 5th place.

Shawn Nielsen drops down from The
Wall and takes the 7th place position.

In her first race, Brooklyn Messer pedals
to the 12th place finish in her category.

Beginner 13-15:

Left:  Dallin Johnson gets in a great
ride, outsprinting the competition at
the finish line by one second, nailing
a 1st place victory.

Right:  The younger UMB riders get
ready for their event, which starts an
hour before the main race. L to R, that's
Harrison, Shawn, and Zach with the
"Peterson Support Crew."

Beginner 16-18:

Left:  Jared Muir cranks up the mountain
to begin his loop around the Soldier
Hollow course. Jared gets the job done
with a solid 1st place.

Right:  UMB racers relax in the early
morning sunshine. Eric, Justin, Jay,
Shane, and Ryan hang by Jay's car
to wait for the race.

Beginner 19-29:

Left:  Jesse Millen-Johnson gets 3rd
on the podium in his second start
as a UMB racer, climbing away from the
starting area and up the mountain.

Right:  UMB's 10-12 racers take the front
row as Ed (on the left) gets the young
competitors ready to start their race.

Beginner 30-39:
Left:  Ryan Nielsen gets down into the grunting position on
a stiff climb toward the end of the lap. Ryan gets another
good finish at 3rd place.

Right:  Mark Messer leans into a turn as Kevin drafts,
taking the 5th place finish on this tough course.

Left:  Kevin Pferdner climbs the hill with the biathlon shooting
backdrop in the background, finishing his lap in 8th place
for the Beginner Men 30-39 category.

Right:  Mike Ball makes his first race as a UMB team member
at Soldier Hollow, fighting through to take 14th. Welcome, Mike!

Beginner 40-plus:

Left:  Dale Hutchings climbs yet another
hill as he takes the 3rd place win for
Beginner Men 40+.

Right:  The 9-and-under racers sprint away
from the start line, with Jakob fighting for
the lead.

Beginner Women:
Left:  Colleen Tvorik gives the team a boost in her
second big race, taking a nice 1st place for Beginner
Women. Nice to have our beginner ladies back on the
trail at this race!

Right:  Rachel Hutchings smiles through the pain as
she climbs the singletrack away from the valley,
finishing in 3rd place on the podium.

Sport/Expert 13-15: UMB had no Sport/Expert 13-15 riders at Soldier Hollow
Sport/Expert 16-18:

Left:  Justin Griffin makes an aggressive
cornering move, ready to begin the next
uphill sprint, and nails 2nd place. The
up-and-down of this course favors a good
all-around rider.

Right:  That tough first race. Jacey rolls
down a narrow bumpy singletrack that's
harder than it looks. Jacey is looking
at another girl who is sitting in the grass
after crashing. Mark cruises along behind
his daughter giving encouragement.

Sport Men 19-29:
Left:  Stephen Brown corners hard as he
winds through the final turns approaching
the finish area, nailing a nice 4th place.

Right:  With passing room on the climb,
Justin fights past team mate Jeff to get
to the top of the hill first.

Sport Men 30-34:

Derek Ransom powers up the hill to
get a ribbon and team points at 5th place.

Dan Hutchings cranks through a turn in
the meadow, nearing 12th place.

Ben Hutchings drops downhill on
his way to the 13th place finish.

Sport Men 35-39:

Left:   Denmark Jensen gets out of the saddle to grunt
up a steep spot, finishing 5th in the Sport Men 35-39 class.

Right:  Darren Harris hits a turn with the jersey in full
Air Conditioner mode, finishing just behind Denmark
at 6th place.

Sport Men 40-plus:

Left:   Jason Sparks is all intensity as he leans through
a fast turn in the grass, finishing with a great 5th place
in this large and tough category.

Right:  Michael MacDonald is wearing his lucky
Bert and Ernie jersey and cranking hard. It's probably
not the jersey that earned him a nice 6th place finish.

Sport Women:

Left:  Catherine Reay carves into a
washboard downhill turn as she makes
a great ride to take 5th place.

Right:   Uphill, again. That's Eric and Ryan
in the line. The Soldier Hollow course
has a lot of up and down riding, with
tough climbs followed by downhill
flights that gives no time for rest.

Expert Men 19-29:

Left:  Eric Ellis heads up the hill on his
first of three laps, finishing the race
in the ribbons at 6th place.

Right:  Recruiting tool. Bruce starts frying
up the burgers and dogs above the stairs
at the start/finish area. If you're jealous,
maybe you need to join the right team.

Expert Men 30-39:

Left:  Mike Engberson looks past the turn
as he rides to the 14th place finish in
Expert Men 30-39.

Right:  Getting the burger put together
while discussing the race. What went
well, what didn't work. And already
thinking about next week.

Expert Men 40-plus:  UMB had no Expert Men 40+ riders at Soldier Hollow
Expert Women:   UMB had no Expert Women riders at Soldier Hollow

Left:  Shane Horton grimaces as he hits
one of the race's steepest climbs on his
singlespeed. Can't sit back and spin;
gotta attack. Shane gets the 8th spot
in this tough category.

Right:  In the shade of the canopy, racers
and family enjoy melon, salads, eggroll,
soda, and cookies to accompany the BBQ.

Left:  Ryan Payne powers up the slope
in another strong race to take the 2nd place
win in Clydesdale.

Right:  UMB's 10-12 racers fill the podium
with the team colors. Good job, racers!
UMB couldn't win without you.

Women 35-plus:

Left:  Jolene Nosack rides hard to chase the Mad Dog
ladies, finishing a couple of seconds behind at 3rd place,
which is still a great performance.

Right:  Sally Hutchings is off the paved shakeout climb and
heading uphill on the singletrack to begin her lap. Sally
gets the 8th place finish in Women 35-plus.

Men 50-plus:
Left:  Jay Griffin cranks up the hill with the shooting area
behind him, chasing Dana to 2nd place in a strong fast race.
For those who are keeping count (and who isn't) Jay's five
races are now 1-1-1-1-2.

Right:  Jeff Kingsford tips into a turn near the willow
trees and heads back uphill on his way to take 9th place
in the Men 50-plus group.

Men 57-plus:
Left:  Speedy Joel Quinn makes his first race in the
UMB jersey, getting a nice 3rd place finish. Welcome,
Joel. We're happy to have you on the team, and for more
reasons than your wife's delicious eggrolls.

Right:  Bruce Argyle touches a little brake in a tight turn
in the grass, riding to the 4th place position.

Below, left:  The oldest racers (Men 57-plus) get their awards.
There's over 50 years difference between the youngest and
oldest UMB team members on the podium at Soldier Hollow.

At Soldier Hollow our team's depth across categories carried the day. UMB got a huge start with 26 points in the 9-and-under and 10-12 categories. Then our beginner racers added points in every single category. Sport and Open categories filled in some critical padding, matching the competition's efforts. It was another important win for UMB as we extended our lead toward the season championship with our second-highest point total of the season. We needed this one, because Mad Dog and Revolution are excellent teams, and they'll be fighting back.  Good job, racers!
