Stan Crane Memorial, Draper - May 25, 2009

The weekend rain saturated the trails in Corner Canyon. Ghost Falls and Clarks Trail were too muddy to ride. The race was pushed back a couple of hours while a new loop was marked on the sandy trails of the lower mountain. The large crowd of racers made it dicey to put all categories on the course at one time. The expert and pro categories were put off until the afternoon. Most racers felt that the substitute trail made a great ride. Salvaging the race (and making it a great race) was a superb feat by Ed and his volunteers. UMB had no first-place finishes in this race. There were second place wins by Jakob Haderlie, Jay Griffin, and Dallin Johnson.

Category 9-and-under:

At Draper, eleven young riders rode for UtahMountainBiking.com in the 9-and-under category.

Nathan Weber rolls the turn near the pond, finishing in 11th place.	Jacob Watkins makes his first ride for the UMB team and nails 12th.	Alex Pferdner also finishes his first race, taking the 13th place spot.

Justin Pferdner cranks up the shakeout toward the loop and takes 16th place.	Jaycob Winnett coasts downhill through the tall grass in the 17th place position.	Baylor Payne takes his first start as a UMB racer and gets 18th place.

Hattie Ramsom enjoys her ride and is the 21st racer across the finish line.	Sawyer Ransom cranks through the oak brush in 27th place.	Aiden Thayer pedals the bike through his first race and a 29th place finish.

Category 10-12:

Left: Zachary Peterson pops out of the tunnel and
heads into the swift-flowing creek, fighting on to take
the 4th place in the 10-12 category.

with his 7th place finish.


Joshua Peterson leans through the turn on his way to the 8th position.	Harrison Woodard powers the pedals to get the 10th spot.	Shawn Nielsen cranks toward the opposite side of the creek on the way to 12th place.

Beginner 13-15:

Beginner 16-18: UMB had no Beginner 16-18 riders at Draper

Beginner 19-29:

a nice 3rd place.

Beginner 30-39:

Kevin Pferdner misses the turnoff to the add-on mini-loop and drops to 18th place.	Nathan Thayer hurries through the oak trees to take 19th place.	As the race starts, Erek Winnett cranks uphill and gets the 23rd spot.

Beginner 40-plus:


Dale Hutchings is hub-deep in the creek on the way to grabbing 6th place.	Cort Ashton is close behind with the 7th place finish in BM 40-plus.	Randy Croall makes his first start for UMB with a 9th place finish.

Also new with this race is Patrick Arthur, heading up the trail toward 11th place.	David Hall joins his brother on the UMB team and nails the 13th spot.	Bill Becker heads toward the finish line and a 22nd place finish.

(Brian Beck raced for UMB in 2008 and took 1st place in this race, but wasn't in UMB team uniform.)

Beginner Women:

Left: Rachel Hutchings heads uphill
on the Corner Canyon singletrack and
grabs the 3rd place spot for Beginner

Right: The UMB 10-12 racers are on the
line and ready to rumble. After a two-hour
delay, the race will finally begin!

Sport/Expert 13-15:

Left: Taylor Watkins #781 raced as a UMB team member and took 6th place. We don't have a photo. Yet.

Right: Ribbons in hand, the 9-and-under
racers have their moment of recognition
for a job well done.

Sport/Expert 16-18:


Justin Griffin hits the water with a strong ride to the podium at 3rd place.	Sam Watkins #776 is new to UMB and not in team jersey, finishing 10th.	Also new and unphotographed is Mitchell Peart #774, who finishes 11th.

Sport Men 19-29:

Sport Men 30-34:

	Left: Ben Hutchings finds the deepest spot as he heads toward shore and a 21st place finish. Right: Dan Hutchings takes the term "tree hugger" literally as he wraps his body around a stout trunk, but somehow gets to the finish line at 22nd.

Sport Men 35-39:


Denmark Jensen gets the front wheel onto the creek bank on the way to 4th place.	Darren Harris powers along the trail and gets the ribbon at 6th place.	Jonathan Hall makes a good ride in this tough category to take 10th.

Sport Men 40-plus:


In a huge 40+ group, Jason Sparks fights through to the 10th position.	Michael MacDonald gets a good finish with the 11th place spot.	Stephen Bergen grabs the 21st place finish in this tough race.

(Marty Watkins #777 checked in as UMB SM 40+ rider, no finish recorded.)

Sport Women:

category with this race and follows Cat around the
course to finish in 11th place.

Expert Men 19-29:

Left: In the later race Monday afternoon,
Eric Ellis sprints out to take a nice
4th place in Expert Men 19-29.

Right: The trail re-route delay made
appetites good for the post-race picnic.
Racers and families enjoyed an assortment
of salads and deserts, drinks, and of course
burgers and dogs.

Expert Men 30-39:

Clydesdale:

	Left: In the biggest (no pun intended) group of Clydesdales in the history of the UMB team, Mike Ball tries out the big-guy category for the first time, finishing in the 4th place spot. Right: Ryan Payne takes the plunge in another strong performance that's good for 5th place.
	Left: Eric Johnson cranks through the water on his way to the 10th place spot in the category, riding two brutal laps. Right: Karl Parkinson heads up the hill in this pre-crash photo. Karl soldiers on, getting his knee (seen in one of the photos at the bottom) and the bike across the line in 12th place.

Women 35-plus:

points at 6th place in Women 35-plus.

Men 50-plus:

finish in Men 50-plus.

Men 57-plus:

Left: Joel Quinn sprints toward the finish line in
a fiercely contested Men 57-plus race, taking the
4th place spot. In this group, 2nd through 4th are
separated by mere seconds.

Right: Bruce Argyle hits the water on the first of his two
laps, finishing in 5th place. In a moment of senility, the
grown-ups vote to do an extra lap for the full sport distance.

Revolution dominated this race, held in their back yard. UMB came in at 2nd place, but without giving up much of our lead toward the season championship. With the rain-delay, this race ate up most of the holiday. This sacrifice by racers and their families is much appreciated. If this was your first ICup experience, understand that race delays have happened only 4 times in the last 6 years. With mother nature's cooperation, things should proceed much more smoothly during the upcoming second half of the season.

The rollers on the northbound doubletrack caught a few racers by surprise and upended them. Then there's the downhill section below Ghost Falls, which features tricky tombstone rocks and big rock stair-steps. Bumps and bruises, a little skin sacrificed to the mountain, but no serious injuries.
