Desert Rampage  -  St. George, March 3, 2007

On a cool but sunny day on the Green Valley race loop, the UMB team started its defense of the Intermountain Cup title. Many riders have moved to new tougher categories.

Left: Jeff Frederick climbs out of Keyhole Wash in his first race for the UMB team, riding in Sport Men 35-39.

At right, Kellie Williams (L) and Dave Larsen (R) sprint out from the starting line. Who got across the finish line first? Read on.

Bill Foster makes his first appearance as
a team rider, taking 4th place in Beginner
Men 40+.

Danny Van Wagoner starts strong,
then takes a DNF as bronchitis sidelines
him. Danny's riding 13-15 Sport.

Dan Hutchings moves into the Mens
Sport 30-34 division for this season,
taking 19th place.

Left:  Matt Flygare fights uphill in a pack of riders on the way to 10th place in Sport Men 30-34.

Right:  Carlee Hunsaker makes a great ride, taking 2nd place in the 10-12 category.

Bruce Argyle moves up to the 57-plus
category this year, taking 2nd place.

Dave Larsen starts strong, then bogs
down with muscle cramps on lap 2,
taking 4th place in Sport/Expert 16-18.

Greg Meyers makes his first start for
the UMB team, riding to 10th place in
Sport Men 35-39.

Left:  Dallin Searle moves into the 10-12 category this year, fighting his way to 4th place.

Right:  Also beginning the new season in a new tougher category, Dan Lund takes 4th place in Beginner Men 13-15. Dan put a major hole in his knee during the race.

Climbing uphill on his first lap, John
Van Wagoner
rides to 14th place in
Sport Men 40-plus.

Jolene Nosack grabs 3rd place for the
UMB team in Women 35-plus.

Justin Griffin is off to a strong start
taking 1st place in the 10-12 age
category.

Left:  Also moving up into the tougher sport division, Kris Nosack fights to a 25th place finish in Sport Men 40-plus.

Right:  Kellie Williams' hard training pays off with a 3rd place finish in Sport/Expert 16-18.

Lynn Stephens sprints to the finish line
on his new race bike, grabbing 16th place.

Mike Engberson, also on a new bike,
takes 8th place in Sport Men 35-39.

Scott Hunsaker zips downhill on the
way to 6th place in Beginner Men 40+.

In action that escaped our photographers,
Cami Searle took a 12th place in 9-and-under.
       Nic Young
took a 3rd place in Beginner Men 13-15.

Sally Hutchings takes a hard shot
to the elbow in a crash, but hangs
on to take 10th in Women 35+.

Colin Hunsaker races in Beginner
Men 16-18, taking 5th place.

Richard Williams rides hard but has
to settle for a DNF in Clydesdale.

Left:  Carlee and Justin go 1 and 2 in the 10-12 race.

Right:  Evan Christensen prepares to drop down the rocks as he heads towards 14th place in Beginner Men 30-39.

Left: Ben Hutchings climbs Keyhole Wash, riding to 13th place in Sport Men 19-29.

Right:  Kris and Jeff use the UMB canopy and workstand for pre-race prep.

Summary:   25 UMB riders hit the trail for this race. Outstanding performers were Justin Griffin with our only 1st place, and Carlee Hunsaker and Bruce Argyle with 2nd place finishes. We gathered 50 team points, split among 11 riders. The kids out-rode the adults by 33 team points to 17. Hey, didn't they say we were a family-friendly team? Many of last year's beginners are now riding Sport -- we're a faster team but the points don't come as easy.
