Solitude State Open
Big Cottonwood Canyon  -  June 30, 2007

Solitude was pleasantly warm, sunny, and dry as a bone for the State Open championships. Deep dust, big rocks, and plentiful roots made the riding technical. We put 22 racers on the mountain, 13 of whom took points for the team. 2007 state champions for their categories are Justin Griffin, Carlee Hunsaker, Stephen Bergen, and Colin Hunsaker, with second-places by Brian Oliver and Dave Larsen.

Category 10-12:

Left:  On the way to the state championship
in the 10-12 category, Justin Griffin hits
the downhill switchback hard. So far this
season for Justin, it's been 8 races held,
8 races attended, 8 races with 1st place
finishes. We don't want to jinx Justin, but
has any racer EVER had a PERFECT year
in the history of the Intermountain Cup?

Right: Flying down the trail is Carlee Hunsaker,
grabbing team points with the 6th-place overall
and the top girl's finish for the ladies'
10-12 state championship

Beginner Men 13-15: No team rider.   Beginner Men 19-29: No team rider.
Beginner Men 16-18:
Left:  Colin Hunsaker cranks up the Serenity
Singletrack, just past that first ugly loose
climb and switchback. Colin powered his
bike to the State Championship for BM 16-18
with this 1st place win.

What a beautiful setting for a race!
Kellie heads toward the creek...

Beginner Men 30-39:
Left:  Stephen Bergen gets low, pulls back and
cranks hard to get up the steep spot on his
second trip up the hill. Stephen motors on to
take the State Championship in BM 30-39.

Right:  In more BM 30-39 action this week,
Dale Hutchings cranks around the second
switchback of the Serenity Singletrack, riding
to 9th place.

Beginner Men 40-plus:

Left:  Brad Sneed pivots hard into a downhill
turn, getting onto the podium with the 3rd
place finish.

Right: Scott Hunsaker heads up the hill into
the big second lap, taking 8th place for
the BM 40-plus category.

Beginner Women:
Left:  Catherine Reay hits the trail hard,
taking another 3rd place in BW to give
the team 5 much-needed team points.

Talking race strategy while waiting for the awards
are Mike, Justin, and Bruce.

Sport-Expert 13-15:
Left:  Making more laps Saturday than anyone else
on the team, Justin Griffin heads into his second
race of the day, taking 5th place in SE 13-15.

Right: Danny Van Wagoner hits the "water hazard"
as he heads down the hill. Danny just misses
the podium, but grabs a team point at 7th place.

Sport/Expert 16-18:

Left:  Dave Larsen takes the 2nd place finish
in Sport/Expert 16-18.

Right:  Splashing through the creek is Kellie Williams
as she heads down the mountain towards 3rd place.

Tyler Margetts makes a splash in this
race with 6th place in SM 19-29.

The Solitude race was our lowest turnout of the season, and for the second time we missed the win by just a whisker. We can still take the championship with good turnout and hard riding in the last couple of races, but the main thing is, "Are we having fun yet?" This was a great day in a beautiful setting, despite the physical difficulty of this always-tough race at Solitude.
