Frozen in Time Icebike Race
Park City, January 21, 2006

Four UMB race team members rode (or perhaps more accurately, ran with their bikes) in the 2nd annual Icebike Race. In Sport Men, Mike placed 4th, Matt 5th, Bruce 8th, and Dom 11th.

The snow seemed firm at first. But as racers pre-rode the course, it turned into a sand trap. No traction, sinking deep.

At left:  Mike (front) and Dom fight through the snow. Only probably 75% of the route was completely impossible to ride.

At right:  Bruce was healing a ruptured gastroc muscle ("I'll be fine as long as I can stay in the saddle, but I need to walk, I'm done.") Mr. Toughness somehow managed to get in his two laps.

The course was on a cross-country ski trail, accessed from a residential neighborhood. Because of loose snow and subfreezing temperatures, the start area was moved from the original plan. Bathroom facilities? Up a few roads and poach a construction site port-a-john.
