Frozen Hog
A tale of trail preparation...

Monday
Jan 23
Cleared snow from deeper areas of
the Middle Trail. Walked entire course,
marking route with flags. 3 hours.

Friday
Jan 27
Shoveled part of Spring, Spring connector,
and Middle to clear a foot of snow,
even as new snow was falling. 2-1/2 hours.

Jan 28. 6 inches of new snow yesterday!
Ride course. Middle is fairly easy. The Luge
is pretty tough. Spent an hour clearing spots.
Jan 28. Lambert's Luge northbound. Tough
riding, tricky, and occasional hike-a-bike, even
after we've stomped and shuffled the snow aside.

Jan 29. Eight inches of new snow during the night.
Hey! What happened to that trail I just
cleared?  Photo on the Spring Connector.
Jan 29.  This is the lap/finish fork on
the Spring Trail. Spent 4 hours
shoveling trail and posting "thataway" signs.

Jan 30. Another six inches of new snow.
On Lambert's Luge, working southward.
You can barely see bike tracks from yesterday.
Jan 30. Same spot a few minutes later.
After 4 hours of work, all sections of the
race course are ready to ride.

Jan 31.  An inch or two of fresh snow during
the night. We're on the Middle Trail.
This section is snowshoe-packed.
Jan 31. Looking northwest on the Middle
Trail, near the water tank road.
No need for new shoveling today.

Feb 1.  Four new inches of snow!
Here's the resting bench on the Middle
Trail, near the little tricky double-dip.
Feb 1.  It's possible to ride, but very
difficult. After the test-ride, I spent
two hours working the shovel.

Thursday

Feb 2.  Snow and rain has been
falling for most of the past 36 hours.

The tire tracks from yesterday afternoon
are almost completely covered here.
The trail is buried in 6 inches of very heavy glop.
It's an almost-impossible ride today.
Mike and I spend much of the afternoon
clearing Middle, Ziggy, Luge, and Spring. Again!

Friday
Feb 3
Feb 3.  A little touch-up on Friday (about 4 hours
of "touch-up") and the trail is looking good.
No further snow is forecast before racetime.
On some sections, there's occasional dirt.
As night falls, we're still working on
ruts from riders during the afternoon.

RACE  DAY !

With our sponsors logos, of course...
Feb 4.  The singletrack race loop is frozen rock-hard overnight. The shakeout loop bites, but hey, there's gotta be SOME challenge! The trail holds up well and is very rideable but challenging. A few riders "dump" in the snow, but there are no injuries.
