Who we are: We're a bunch of bike bums who ride together. We're all connected in some way to Mad Scientist Software -- owners, manager, programmer, employees and relatives. (It's a real "family thing" -- Bruce, Chad, Dominic, and Mike are married to Matt's sisters.) Bruce is the main website editor and trail explorer. Mike handles the business side, through his position as CEO of Mad Scientist. |

| How it happened: The mountain bike trail pages were first created by Bruce Argyle on
the Mad Scientist Software web site in 1997. At first, it was simply a collection of
biking photos from company-sponsored adventures. As the photos accumulated,
Bruce split them up into individual trail pages, with a brief ride description.
After a couple of years, we had quite a collection of trails, and mountain
bikers were hitting our company web site for trail information! Riders
requested trail maps and additional information. The pages were expanded
and moved to UtahMountainBiking in
2000. That was our start.
That's Bruce, with Jackie the UtahMountainBiking mascot. Jackie loves to follow the bikes on mountain trails. Peak speed for Jackie is 22 mph, but she can maintain 14-16 mph for many miles without a break. Average day's trail run is 12 miles, biggest day 36 miles. |

Why we're doing this: For fun. It gives us an
excuse to go biking and take pictures. Yes, the site earns some cash from advertising
and guidebook
sales, but we just blow the money on bike parts and trips to Moab. We admit
we have no
"special qualifications" to do this biking web site -- other than
hundreds of days spent happily mountain biking.

Our goal: We
try to give useful information. Is this trail worth riding? And what will I
see there? How tough is it to ride? Already, we're the best on-line source of information about Utah's
bike trails, with over 200 trails listed. Every trail on this site, we've ridden. No second-hand
information. For information on how we evaluate a trail,
Sometimes we can't resist showing off. Don't worry, this isn't something YOU have to do to ride the trail. We throw in photos of our moments of glory because, hey, it's OUR web site. Here Chad takes major air. |
More than just "bike trails:"
Because Bruce is an emergency physician when he's not riding his bike,
UtahMountainBiking.com is the web's leading authority on
mountain-biking first aid -- just check it
out! And as we break bike parts, we're building a complete bike repair
and upkeep resource, with lots of photos to make it easy. Check out the features
on biking fitness, winter biking, mountain photography (and much more) in our goodies
section. Our short trail videos are fun, and
tell the story of what it's like to ride the trail! Want to put mountain
biking wallpaper or a biking photo
screensaver on your computer? We've got it, free.
