In spite of the "issues" I think this sounds like fun and the video on the website of the course makes it look like a fun one.
I wish I could have gone. Maybe next year. _________________ http://boxelderbiker.blogspot.com/ |

Ok, so heres some ideas:
Racing: CLOSE THE COURSE!!! This must be actively enforced. Marshals; don't say they will be somewhere or watching something and then, well, they aren't. Each person on our team witnessed someone ride down the "mandatory dismount" area. ??? Oh well.
[/i] |
Well I'm to blame for some of this situation. I was the "course marshal" at the upper drop for the first 6 hours. I wasn't at the riders meeting, so I don't know what any of them were told. I think I was initially told that the riders could ride the drop if they wanted to, assuming that the course below was clear.
My primary purpose for being at that spot was to render First-Aid if needed. I don't like having to be a course Nazi about everything. I had numerous non-racers come thru, but most of them were associated with the race.
My personal feeling, after having worked at races and events in Southern Utah for 12 years is as follows. Take the attitude and leave it at home. Testosterone fueled pettiness bores me, and I'm not getting paid to do what I do. I would rather be riding my own bike somewhere without all the egos. |

You are not to blame at all. You were there which was enough of a deterrent. All the racers were told to dismount or incur a 5 minute penalty followed by disqualification for a second offense. Seeing you there was enough to know that "someone" was watching. It was only later (after your shift?) that no one was there. The morning was when we saw people begin to take advantage of the missing marshall. Thanks for volunteering your time. I've done the same and it's hard to watch people ride all day while you get to sit on your butt.
As far as attitudes, I believe I've saved everything for once the race was over and gave the organizers the benefit of the doubt. They made a solid showing and took a big leap of faith. I applaud the effort. I don't however like paying for an event and having promises not delivered on, especially when it comes to "the rules". I hate cheating and giving someone the opportunity to cheat through negligence is frustrating in the least.
Once again, a fun event. We had a good time and it was really tough. We raced our own race and did our best to assist where needed. Don't know how many more ways I can say this. _________________ "the impossible can become possible....If...you're...AWESOME!" |

I can respect your attitude. I wasn't necessarily singling you out (although I did quote you). At various events I have worked it seems like occasionally there is a fun sucker, somebody that has to suck the fun out of everything, no matter the situation. As a volunteer, I have little tolerance for that. |

| One other thing to maybe pass on to the organizers, don't have it Halloween night/weekend next year. A lot of us have families that probably don't think that spending their Halloween at a 24 hour race is the best way to celebrate Halloween. I know it made for a fun tie-in, but I would guess it also limited attendance. October race and St. George should make for an awesome race time and place and I hope something sticks. |

I agree with you JZ that it may limit some people because of the holiday tie in but I also think that is a big part of what made this race unique. I think it just so happened that the hour change over occured this year on halloween. Hence the race on that night. The 25 hour thing was definitely cool and I think they plan to stick with that rather than the holiday. They tried to make it family friendly by involving costume contests and campground trick-or-treating. The only thing that failed there was just not enough people. Next year I think they will have it on the time change again (which isn't halloween night?). They will probably still have a costume contest I'm sure. You are right though in that it limited (to a degree) the amount of people who came to their inaugural event. _________________ "the impossible can become possible....If...you're...AWESOME!" |

Halloween falls on a Fri or Sat only twice every seven years. Like was said before, IIRC it's the time change thing that they are looking for as a constant.
I have spoken with the promoter/organizer and she's very committed to making this better and more fun in 2010.
One thing to please keep in mind is that with a unlimited budget anything is possible... but that's not the case here. Some of the simple things such as:
Close off bottom JEM trail access
Potable water
Service Porta Poopers
Choose appropriate start based on entries
Some are not as easy and take money:
Improve timing and scoring and get it as close to "real time" as possible _________________ M.L. |

Monte, you guys rock. I really need to just come down there to ride sometime. I have never done the Goose. Everytime I am in Hurricane it is to race and I never stay long enough to get a recreational ride. _________________ "the impossible can become possible....If...you're...AWESOME!" |
